Weekend review

Kilmarnock 4 Hibernian 1 (Sunday)

Killie romped to an comfortable win against a struggling Hibs side.  Paul Heffernan gave his side an early lead when he took a pass from full-back Rory McKeown and coolly slotted the ball past Graham Stack, and although Garry O'Connor levelled for Hibs with a clever chipped finish, Killie were soon back in control.  Hibs stopper Paul Hanlon turned James Dayton's cross past Stack to send the home side in ahead at the break, and Dayton curled in a free-kick after David Wotherspoon's foul on Danny Buijs to make it 3-1.  Heffernan volleyed in his second from close range from Buijs' cross to wrap up the comprehensive win - and missed a chance of a hat-trick when he blasted Dean Shiels' pass against the bar.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0 Rangers 2

Both sides finished with ten men in a game dominated by controversial penalty decisions.  Caley Thistle were unhappy at the awards but Rangers had two claims waved away in the first-half and also had a NIkica Jelavic goal disallowed for offside against Maurice Edu.  Referee Euan Norris waved away one penalty claim for a Inverness C.T. handball from Jelavic's header then another when Edu's effort was blocked.  However he awarded the visitors a spot-kick when Steven Naismith was brought down by Ross Tokely and the Inverness C.T. defender was red-carded and Jelavic scored from the spot.  Rangers were awarded a second penalty eight minutes later when Dorin Goian went down in a tangle with Tom Aldred and although Ryan Esson saved Jelavic's spot-kick, Edu scored from the rebound.  The American was shown a second yellow card for a late tackle on Nick Ross as both sides finished with ten men - and Rangers also suffered an injury blow when loan defender Kyle Bartley was substituted with a groin injury during the first-half.  He's now doubtful for Thursday's Europa League game against Slovenians Maribor.

Celtic 5 Dundee United 1

Celtic maintained their 100% start in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with a comfortable win over United.  Anthony Stokes headed in from six yards out after four minutes but United levelled when Johnny Russell slotted in Garry Kenneth's miscued shot.  Gary Hooper restored Celtic's lead with a close-range header before Kris Commons saw an effort rebound off the post.  Ki Sung Yeung blasted in Commons' pass to make it 3-1 then substitute Shaun Maloney teed up Joe Ledley for a simple finish for the fourth.  Another sub, James Forrest, finished off a crisp passing move to wrap the victory up in stoppage time.  The only problem for Celtic was the injury to Gary Hooper, who was stretchered off with an ankle injury, making him doubtful for Thursday's Europa League clash with Sion.  Celtic will take Borussia Monchengladbach's Cameroon international striker Mohammadou Idrissou on trial next week.

Hearts 3 Aberdeen 0

Hearts won their first league game in twelve attempts - but Aberdeen's miserable run against Hearts continued.  They've now gone five games against the Edinburgh side without a win.  Although Kari Arnason headed Rob Milsom's corner against the home crossbar, Arvydas Novikovas drove in a left-foot drive to put Hearts in front.  Hearts increased their lead when David Templeton provided the opening for John Sutton to slot home his first goal for Hearts before the break - and the ex-Motherwell striker made the points safe soon after the re-start when he finished coolly from Scott Robinson's pass.  The home side finished comfortably to give them the perfect boost for Thursday's Europa League meeting with Spurs.

St Johnstone 0 Dunfermline 1

Dunfermline finished with ten men but were still too strong for stuttering St Johnstone.  The Pars, who'd won all three meetings the last time the clubs were both in the SPL ten seasons ago, grabbed their first win of this season thanks to Andy Kirk's strike on the half-hour.  The Northern Ireland international poked the ball in from Jason Thomson's low cross - and the visitors came close to increasing their lead after the break when Martin Hardie headed wide on the hour.  Half-time home sub Fran Sandaza's run ended when he was brought down by John Potter, who was red-carded for the foul, but Liam Craig's spot-kick was blocked by Paul Gallacher - the Pars' 'keeper's second penalty save of the season after his stop from St Mirren's Stevie Thompson in their opening game on July 25.

St Mirren 0 Motherwell 1

Motherwell stayed clear at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League thanks to Tom Hateley's injury-time free-kick.  An entertaining game looked to be heading towards a stalemate when Hateley's curler - awarded after Gary Teale's foul on Nicky Law - beat Craig Samson low to the 'keeper's left.  Home 'keeper Samson was by far the busier and made excellent first-half stops from Jamie Murphy, Law and ex-Saints' frontman Michael Higdon.  Darren Randolph's only real save was from a long-range effort from Teale.  Samson saved well again from Ross Forbes' long-range free-kick before Hateley struck to condemn Saints to their first defeat of the season.  Motherwell have yet to concede a goal this season and face Rangers next Sunday.
