Weekend review

St Mirren 1 Aberdeen 0
Saints made it four wins in their last seven meetings with Aberdeen thanks to Nigel Hasselbaink's goal. It was no more than Saints deserved after they'd totally dominated Craig Brown's side in the first-half. Striker Steven Thompson - who'd shaved off his beard after missing a penalty against Dunfermline on Monday - fired over from Jeroen Tesselaar's corner and Hasselbaink twice missed the target in the first-half. However five minutes after the break Hasselbaink fired home when he was through one-on-one with Dons 'keeper David Gonzalez. Aberdeen's substitutes Michael Paton and Scott Vernon both had late chances to level but they couldn't find the breakthrough to get back into the game.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle 0 Hibernian 1
Garry O'Connor's injury-time goal saw Hibs grab their first win at Inverness in ten visits. Caley Thistle were left rueing a string of missed chances - Greg Tansey saw an effort hit the woodwork for the second week in a row and Gregory Tade had the ball in the net but his celebrations were cut short by an offside flag against Richie Foran. Hibs' Ian Murray also had a goal chalked off for offside and Graham Stack saved well from Shane Sutherland. The game looked set to finish goalless until O'Connor's angled shot deceived Ryan Esson in the second minute of injury-time to give Colin Calderwood's side victory.

Kilmarnock 0 Motherwell 0
Motherwell stayed top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League after an entertaining goalless draw at Rugby Park. Both sides played some excellent football but were unable to break the deadlock. Shaun Hutchinson headed over for the visitors while Killie's Ben Hutchinson and James Dayton both saw efforts saved by Darren Randolph - but it was Motherwell who were twice denied on either side of the interval. First Cammy Bell saved well from 'Well's Bob McHugh then made an even better full-length stop after the break from Steve Jennings' drive. Nicky Law and Tom Hateley both had chances to win it for Motherwell but in the end a point apiece was a fair reflection. Motherwell were without thigh injury victim Michael Higdon, who'll be out for ten days.

St Johnstone 0 Rangers 2
Rangers grabbed their first win under manager Ally McCoist with a comfortable win at his first club St Johnstone. Goals in either half from Stevie Naismith and Nikica Jelavic were enough to overcome shotshy Saints. Naismith headed the opener from Lee Wallace's free-kick on the half-hour, and after that the visitors seldom looked stretched. Jelavic added the second from Naismith's pass four minutes after the interval. Saints were the lowest scorers in Scottish football last season and a lack of goals looks like being Derek McInnes' problem again. An early Murray Davidson drive wide was the closest they came to troubling Allan McGregor.

Hearts 0 Dundee United 1
(Sunday) United moved joint top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League with an excellent win at Tynecastle. Jon Daly's goal just before the interval proved to be the difference between the sides. The result continued Hearts' miserable record against the Tannadice side - they've won only one of the last nine meetings against United. United left striker David Goodwillie out of their squad because of the transfer speculation surrounding the youngster, who's being tracked by Blackburn Rovers and Rangers. Stephen Elliot and John Sutton threatened in the early stages for the home side but John Rankin also came close with a free-kick for United which hit the bar. However Daly had already tested Marian Kello when he struck to put the visitors ahead, heading home from Willo Flood's cross. Johnny Russell came close to increasing United's lead but although Hearts pushed forward after the break, efforts by David Templeton and Ryan Stevenson were both saved by Dusan Pernis. Hearts are now without a win in ten league games.
