Midweek review

Motherwell 6 – 6 Hibernian
Well remain favourites for fourth spot after sharing a dozen goals with their main Euro rivals in the highest scoring SPL game of all time.  A Colin Nish hat-trick and a Derek Riordan strike cancelled out Giles Coke's tap in and John Sutton's header before the break.  Anthony Stokes' double put Hibs 6-2 ahead but Coke, Tom Hateley and Sutton pulled it back to 6-5.  Ross Forbes missed a chance to level from the penalty spot but Lukas Jutkiewicz scored an outrageous goal in injury time to leave Well's destiny in the own hands ahead of Sunday's trip to Ibrox.

Aberdeen 1 – 2 Kilmarnock
Kilmarnock grabbed a precious win on the road to leave them needing just a draw at home to bottom side Falkirk on Saturday to secure their Clydesdale Bank Premier League status.  The Rugby Park side had previously scored just four goals away from home in the league all season and badly needed to reverse that trend if they were to keep their noses in front going into the do-or-die final day clash.  It looked a tall order when Mark Kerr struck his first goal for four years on 26 minutes, a stunning effort from the edge of the box giving the keeper no chance.  But Killie dug deep after the break and got their equaliser through a fine strike by Liam Kelly.  And with 16 minutes remaining Kevin Kyle rose to convert Graeme Owens cross with a header and inch his side closer to safety.

Falkirk 0 – 0 St Johnstone
Falkirk must win at Rugby Park on Saturday or else they will be relegated from the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.  Killie's win at Pittodrie meant even a Falkirk win here would still have left Steven Pressley's side needing a final day victory but they still couldn't get the morale boosting three points they craved.  The Bairns were the better team in the first half but neither Tom Scobbie's header or Pedro Moutinho's free-kick tested Saints keeper Graeme Smith enough.  Saints improved after the break but Kenny Deuchar nodded Danny Grainger's free-kick wide and Paul Sheerin blasted a decent chance over.  When Enoch Showunmi's shot was deflected into the air, Ryan Flynn's header trickled just wide.  Then at the death Scott Arfield's shot was tipped over by Smith to compound Falkirk's frustration.

Hearts 0 – 0 Dundee United
Hearts couldn't force the win that would give them a realistic hope of playing in Europe next season.  Although the Gorgie side could yet end the season on the same number of points as Hibs, they'd also need to oversee an 11-goal swing in one game. United might well have had the game sewn up by half time with Craig Conway having two efforts blocked on the line while ex-Jambo Andy Webster had a goal ruled out for a foul. The home side's David Templeton had their best effort with a fierce drive that was saved by goalkeeper Steve Banks.

Hamilton 0 – 0 St Mirren
Saints made absolutely certain of their Clydesdale Bank Premier League status with a point on the road.  It would have taken a near miraculous sequence of results to deny Gus MacPherson's men a place in the top flight but this draw removed any nagging doubts.  This scrappy affair was lit up by Marco Paixo's 40-yard drive coming back off Mark Howard's crossbar.  Last weekend's St Mirren goalscoring hero Stephen O'Donnell then fired a shot wide from an acute angle while Saint's Michael Higdon thought he'd found the net with a header only for Mark McLaughlin to clear on the line.  Higdon had a late header blocked by keeper Sean Murdoch as the game ended goalless.
