Community award - your local hero
Football is Scotland's national game, and the SPL clubs are at the heart of their local community. The clubs do a great job with their own programmes of activity, but what about the fans out there that help support football in the community by giving their time, effort or expertise?
Clydesdale Bank have recognised a number of these people with their Community Award, which was presented to them by a representative of the team they support. Clydesdale Bank also donated £100 towards the schemes they were involved with.
Clydesdale Bank Community Award
Derek Moorhead from Edinburgh is the latest recipient of the Clydesdale Bank Community Award. He was nominated by Raymond McGrath, the father of one of the kids Derek has coached.
Derek got involved in coaching after suffering a bad cruciate injury about 8 years ago which meant he could not play. He started coaching with Leith Athletic, then moved to Edina Hibs where he coached Darren McGrath, who moved on to play with Falkirk FC for a time.
The Edina Hibs Under 13s team won the Steve Maskery Cup in their first season with Derek in charge, and the team won promotion from the third to the second division. He now looks after Craigroyston Boys Club.
Derek received his award from Hibs captain Rob Jones and goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalamby, at a Clydesdale Bank event at Easter Road. He said: "I'm very proud to get this award, it was a bolt out of the blue to find I'd been nominated. But I'm not in it for rewards, my reward is seeing the kids enjoy themselves, training and playing football."
